Sam Shaw Exhibition of Marilyn Monroe — Palma de Mallorca
Legendary American photographer Sam Shaw, best known for his intimate images of Marilyn Monroe, including the iconic subway-grate photograph from The Seven Year Itch (1955), was celebrated in Palma de Mallorca in the summer of 2019 with an outdoor exhibition spanning 60 years of Americana. A six-foot portrait of Monroe was installed on the city’s main boulevard, drawing crowds throughout July and August.
The show, displayed through August 2019, drew on Shaw’s extraordinary archive of Hollywood and American cultural life: from his close friendship with Monroe to his work documenting music, sport and everyday American society over six decades. Shaw, who died in 1999, was one of the most trusted photographers of his era, repeatedly given access that no other lensman was granted.
